:: The (Infamous) DMB Song Evolution Archive :: :: Unique & Defining peformances of the Dave Matthews Band :: |
We all know that no two versions of any DMB song are alike. This explains why so many of us have up to hundreds of live shows which, lets face it, have many of the same songs in the setlists. However, songs change, from night to night, from tour to tour. What I hope to slowly put together is a database of all DMB songs and jams that archive the most unique and most important performances of each song/jam throughout each song's evolution.
Under the major eras of each song, some of the dates listed may not be especially unique within the context of that era, but they are typical of that particular style of performance of the song. They may also be performances of which high quality recordings are easily available to the community. I will be adding dates and possibly brief explanations/notes of other signifigant performances of each song many of which just happen to be some of my personal favorites, so pardon the bias. I welcome any and all opinions of whoever cares to share them with me. I obviously dont know everything, so I'm sure I will miss some important things, but feel free to help me out!
THANKS!

| #36 > Everyday :: |
Full Band :: Carter drum intro; often played into Ants Marching 1993-04-10 :: Soundchecked 1993-05-21 :: 1993-07-27 :: Oteil Burbridge and Mike Durham guest in an epic performance upwards of 30 minutes. Includes several popular television theme songs. 1993-12-07 :: Tim Reynolds guests 1994-02-05 :: 1994-11-29 :: Craig Honeycut guests 1995-02-23 :: John Popper guests 1995-08-15 :: Tim Reynolds guests #36 > Ants Marching 1996-05-11 :: G. Love guests; Includes a rap mid jam 1998-08-09 :: Last full band "original" #36
#36 w/ the Lovely Ladies (1999-2000) :: Slow it down, throw out Carter's usually insane drum intro, and bring out 3 African American Ladies with microphones, and you'll get the new #36. 1999-09-11 ::
Everyday (#36) (2001-Present) :: Put Boyd on a Wah-Wah Pedal (not a bad thing), bring in Glen Ballard...... and say hello to Everyday. 2001-03-16 :: Dave solo, #36 outro proving that a full #36 is more or less dead, and has become only a shadow to Everday. 2001-04-21 :: Tour opener; Lovely Ladies guest providing a weak link to the 1999-2000 #36 2001-07-07 :: Lovely Ladies collaboration is more integrated and better executed for the remainder of the summer. Pretty good stuff (considering...) 2002-05-18 :: Crowd plays the part of the Ladies, DMB brings back music from the old #36 to end the song. 2002-07-26 :: More old #36 lyrics make a comeback to open the song! Great surprise. |
|
| Perhaps one of the most drastic evolution over the longest period of time. Started as a dance tune and a tribute to the late Chris Hani. It was played consistantly through 1996. There was one token appearance during a 1997 Dave & Tim show, and final 3 appearances in 1998, before the Lovely Ladies moved in during the '99 tour and changed the face of the song forever. Eventually the tune evolved into the title track for the album Everyday, and #36 became merely a sing a long outro. | ||

| This song has certainly seen some interesting twists in its day. Its been played consistantly since 1995 and in the last 5 years has been the vehicle of some incredible guest performances at times near 30 minutes. Perhaps one day we'll hear a 41 minute #41... | ||

| There are countless performances with guest appearances. I will add them to this list slowly but surely as I come across them. Check back often on this! This has been a staple for years to close shows. In recent years, it has typically opened with an extended solo from Stefan, occasionally including pieces of cover such as "Stir It Up". Performances that do not include special guests not touring with the band have had the jams anchored by Butch who delivers an electric guitar solo from his keyboards. | ||

Truely one of the great performances of this combo.
Warehouse Intro :: 1995 :: Saturday Night Live 1999-06-15 :: Quite a suprise in the encore, as Warehouse had already been played earlier in the set. Who would've thought this?

Blue Water (Baboon Farm) :: |
Full Band :: Often part of a segue including Typical Situation and/or Minarets 1992-07-08 :: Possibly Boyd's best solo ever 1993-01-20 :: Another great performance 1993-01-26 :: 1993-03-23 :: Extended Jam exceeding 17 minutes. 1993-08-19 :: Warren Haynes guests; Amazing performance 1993-11-13 :: Another quality performance from Boyd 1995-02-25 :: Chilling last full band performance. Recently (Water Wine Jam) > BWBF > Typical Situation

|
| One of the band's great "erie" songs. Performed many times between 1992 & 1994. But disappeared in 1995 after the last full band performance on February 24, 1995. It showed up during a handful of 1996 Dave & Tim shows as intros for Typical Situation and Minarets and once more during a Dave & Tim show in 1997, and much to everyone's surprise, it was teased as much as a full verse in the winter of 2000 by Dave solo. Then again an unexpected appearance was made on 7.12.02 | ||

Roi on Sax (2001-Present) :: For some reason, Roi put down the flute in favor of the sax at the end of the song. Its a crime. 2002-05-21 :: Butch Taylor guests 2002-07-16 :: Butch Taylor guests, great energy!
Dave & Tim :: 1999-02-05 ::
Dave Solo :: 2001-09-29 :: Some new lyrics added to replace Boyd's absence mid song. |

Dancing Nancies :: |
Dancing Nancies w/ Peter Griesar (1992-1993) :: As was the case with most songs, Peter overpowers the band. Interesting versions. 1993-03-23 ::
Dancing Nancies (1993-2000) :: Not much changing in the song, but a powerhouse live song. 1995-08-15 :: Tim Reynolds guests; Nancies > Warehouse 1995-12-31 :: 2000-06-23 :: 2000-08-02 :: 2002-07-31 :: Nancies> Warehouse makes its return! With enough energy to make up for the last year and a half!
Dave Solo :: 2002-07-26 :: 2 legitimate teases durning the show including the opening verse and one chorus |
|
|
Characterized by unique intros and high energy solos from Boyd. This was a staple for many years, but since 1999, it had only been played a few times in summer 2000 and finally made its return to the setlists in late July, 2002 after almost 2 years off. In the mid '90s, Nancies often segued into Warehouse, a segue that also made a comeback in 2002. |

Grey Street :: |
Grey Street (2000-2001) :: 2000-06-26 :: Opened the song like he never has and probably never will. "Oh, little jimmy's been a bad boy again, he says never walk this way." 2000-07-12 :: "She just listens to the same old thing, running out onto Grey Street." "Heaviness flows out of her and she sings to sign of her sunlight." "Although lonileness she dreams of this, she only says things of her life." More? Sure. "The hole in her tightens and the wings can make her fly, out of bright light she falls to blackness, out of colors no black and white." What else...."Then the rolling rage is over and anger comes laughing out, though anger turns into loving, out of nighttime her soul is found. Why can't flowers bloom in the desert? Only hope can come from God." Wow. 2000-07-19 :: Easily Dave's best performance when it comes to lyrics on the spot. The whole song is full of references to rain and Noah's Ark. 2000-09-04 :: Bela Fleck guests 2000-12-13 :: "It's as if the wrongs in her heart fall, she's no longer sore, and black and white." 2001-07-07 :: "But then the fog rolled heavy on her, and all the brightness fades away." 2001-08-03 :: One word: Roi. Clocking in at 8:25, this is the longest version that the boys have played thus far. Roi is absolutely mesmorizing and they let him go for a good 3 minutes. Lyrical standouts: "As if the fog rolled up in inside her, and she sees the fading light."
Grey Street (2002-Present) :: After being recorded for Busted Stuff, the song was shorted a bit losing some of the chorus towards the end of the song 2002-04-07 ::
|
|
|
This song, orginally recorded during the Lillywhite Sessions has been heavily played since its debut in June, 2000. The first 2 years featured an array of lyrical improvisations giving the song its most defining characteristics before becoming more standardized in 2002. |

|
Halloween :: |
Early Halloween (1992-1993) :: Though this song is generally known as an angry song, early versions were almost quiet. 1992-10-31 :: Debut; Techno Intro 1992-11-18 :: Much more developed 1993-01-20 :: 1993-07-06 :: Greg Howard guests in place of Stefan
Halloween (1993-1997) :: Greatest versions characterized by Carter's insane solo intros and outros 1994-02-22 :: Performance used for Recently EP
Post Before These Crowded Streets :: Song went through some pretty significant changes at this point. 1998-04-21 :: First performance of new version; Dave moans at the end 1998-12-07 :: Tim Reynolds guests; Incredible performance 2002-08-27 :: Very small tease from Dave & Stefan 2002-09-08 :: What a way to close out the tour! First full band (minus Boyd) performance in years! 2002-12-21 :: Completely unexpected following James Brown and Sex Machine!
Dave & Carter :: 1993-04-09 :: 2000-12-04 :: Insane performance completely on a whim to start the encore. 2000-12-08 :: Last performance of the song. 2002-12-14 :: Very light tease through a couple verses of the song. "Lounge Style"
Dave & Tim :: 1993-03-13 :: |
|
| Heres a song that definately tests the boundaries of Dave's vocal chords. Its undergone some significant changes. It made pretty regular appearances between 1992 and 1994. Then only appeared 8 more times until 1998 when it was played 9 times. There were many performances during the 1999 Dave & Tim tour, and in the Winter of 2000, we got 2 surprise performances with Dave & Carter. Two years later though, we finally got a couple full band performances out of them! | ||

Jimi Thing ::
|
Jimi
Thing w/ Peter Griesar (1992-1993) :: Some REALLY great early performances
happened during this time period.
1992-07-31 :: "Church Me Peter" Outro 1993-03-23 :: Great 20 minute performance with some *excellent* vocal work by Mr. Boyd Tinsley; A Walk On The Wild Side Outro
Jimi Thing (1993-1997) :: Song took a new direction after Peter left the mix. Jam took on a new energy with Roi in the driver's seat. 1993-03-27 :: Doug Wannamaker guests; Alternate ending - possibly a mistake - sort of an extention of the last bridge. 1993-11-13 :: Jimi Thing > Seek Up 1993-11-27 :: Jimi Thing > Seek Up 1994-07-28 :: 1994-10-08 :: 1995-01-26 :: Trey Anastasio guests 1995-01-31 :: Roi adds some funk to the jam 1995-12-31 :: 1996-10-15 :: Truncated Jimi Thing > What Would You Say Encore
Jimi Thing (1997-1998) :: In my opinion, the weakest period for the song. The band just didn't seem to be on the same page the last 10 minutes of the song, lacking a general cohesiveness present in earlier versions. 1997-06-08 :: Angel Intro
Jimi Thing (1998-2000) :: In late 1998, possibly as a result of Tim Reynolds joining the band on stage, the jam took a whole new direction that stuck for several years. 1998-12-19 :: Tim Reynolds owns this performance, definately my favorite live DMB moment. 1999-09-11 :: Great performance. Dave nails his solo (sometimes difficult for him to pull off).
Jimi Thing (2000-Present) :: While the structure of the jam still resembles that of the 1998 jam, there has recently been some more experimentation with the energy of the jam, mainly due to Carter's drum work. 2000-09-02 :: 2000-09-13 :: Bela Fleck & The Flecktones guest in an epic 25 minute performance. 2001-05-15 :: Soulive guests; 'Get Your Soulive' Outro 2002-05-13 :: Great upbeat jam from the band. 2002-08-26 :: Upbeat jamming continues, very unique off time solo from Dave
Full Band Acoustic (What Will Become Of Me Outro) :: 1995-04-05 :: WWBOM Debuts 1995-05-10 :: Classic performance 1995-08-13 :: Fantastic performance for Modern Rock Live w/ What Will Become Of Me
Dave & Tim (What Will Become Of Me Outro) :: Acoustic versions end with a quiet jam that eventually became Pantala Naga Pampa 1997-02-20 :: "Angel" Intro (Riff eventually becomes Angel, recorded for Everyday); WWBOM Outro 1999-02-05 :: WWBOM > PNP 1999-03-13 :: WWBOM > PNP; You Shook Me jam |
|
|
Again, this has been a staple from the beginning. Though
like Two Step, this tune offers some of the greatest variations in performances
year to year. This song has changed, not so much from guest appearances,
but through shear evolution and experimentation, maybe even boredom.

John The Revelator > JTR |
John The Revelator (1999) :: 1999-03-14 :: Debut; Dave & Tim; Carlos Santana guests 1999-03-24 :: Dave & Tim 1999-05-25 :: Full Band debut; Butch Taylor, Bela Fleck, Santana Band, Lovely Ladies guest 1999-05-26 :: Butch Taylor, Bela Fleck, Santana Band, Lovely Ladies guest 1999-05-29 :: Last Full Band performance; Butch Taylor, Santana Band, Lovely Ladies guest
JTR (2000-Present) :: 2000-06-20 :: JTR Debut 2000-08-22 :: Great Performance, personal favorite 2000-09-16 ::
|
|
| This song was originally written for possible inclusion on Santana's 'Supernatural' Album, but didn't make the cut. It featured original music with a chorus featuring a cover of "John The Revelator", a religious song from the 1930's. However during the recording of the 'Lillywhite Sessions', the chorus was replaced by original lyrics and music, and the title was shortened to JTR. It was played regularly in 2000 & 2001, but after being one of only 3 Lillywhite tunes not to be included on 'Busted Stuff' it was given a break from rotation in the Spring of 2002. | ||
