Fall 1991 :: Coran Capshaw takes over the management of DMB. Capshaw, the owner of Trax Nightclub also sets up their weekly Tuesday night gigs in late Sept 1991.

 

 

 

11.05.91 :: DMB plays the 1st of their historic weekly Tuesday Night gigs at Trax.

Summer 1991 :: Charles Newman signs on as DMB's first manager.

 

 

 

 

Early 1991 :: By DMB's 4th rehursal they all agree that they have something worthwhile and decide to continue as a live band.

1.21.91 :: Coran Capshaw asks Dave to "warm up the crowd" at Eastern Standard opening for the Indigo Girls.

9.12.91 :: DMB is believed to play its first gig at Trax Nightclub in Charlottesville, VA as an opening band.

6.04.91 :: Mark Roebuck sets up DMB with their 1st weekly gig at Eastern Standard in Charlottesville, VA. Roebuck is a bartender at the venue.

5.11.91 :: Dave Matthews Bands 1ST PAID PERFORMANCE at a private party on the roof of the famous Pink Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. ville, VA.

4.20.91 :: Dave Matthews Band's 1ST LIVE PERFORMANCE at a Charlottesville Earth Day Festival for approx. 200 people. Boyd Tinsley guests.
Feb 1991 :: DMB records a 5 song demo in Carter's Basement including Recently, The Bourbon Song/Anytime We Can Stop (Warehouse), Best of What’s Around, I’ll Back You Up & The Song That Jane Likes.

Early 1991 :: John D'Earth suggests his student, high school junior, Stefan Lessard and he agrees to participate.

May 1991 :: Leroi tells a club manager before an early gig to put "Dave Matthews" on the promo poster and a band will be joining him. The manager posts "Dave Matthews Band" and the name sticks!

Dec 1991 :: Minarets, Jimi Thing, & Dancing Nancies debut.

Early 1991 :: Dave, Carter & Leroi have their first rehursal in Carter's basement and is described as "heinously bad" by Carter. The worked on Dave's 4 songs, but agreed they desperately needed a bass player.

 

June-Aug 1991 :: DMB plays weekly gigs at Eastern Standard normally drawing crowds from Millers just down the street, though crowds would sometimes be as few as a dozen people.

May 1991 :: Dave Matthews performs 8-10 times in a production of "Speakeasy: The Rags of Ragtime" at the Live Arts theatre in Charlottesville, VA.

April 1991 :: Dave Matthews records a 5 song demo at Rutabega Studios for copywright purposes.

May-June 1991 :: Typical Situation, What Would You Say, Satellite, & One Sweet World are written.

 

Summer 1991 :: DMB decides to let fans plug into their soundboard to tape shows - a crucial marketing tactic.

Early 1991 :: Dave asks Leroi Moore to play on a demo of Matthews' original songs.

Early 1991 :: Dave quits tending bar at Millers and spends 4 hours a night writing songs in his Mom's basement.

 

 

4.05.92 :: DMB plays at Charlotteville's Van Rypers Music Festival, then the largest crowd they'd ever played for.

 

Summer 1991 :: Boyd Tinsley guests with DMB as his touring schedule permits.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Spring 1991 :: Dave, Carter, Leroi, & Stefan are free in the afternoons to rehurse at Millers. ews & Greg Howard play a show at Millers.

 

6.03.97 :: DMB opens the Summer Tour in Richmond, VA for what is the shortest full band touring year in the band's history.

11.01.91 :: True Reflections debuts

Feb-March 1991 :: Cry Feedom & Lover Lay Down are written.

Fall 1991 :: Two Step & People, People debut.

9.01.91 & 9.02.91 :: DMB plays their first out of state gigs at the Road House in Denver, CO. This is also the band's first time playing gigs 2 nights in a row at the same venue.

 

Feb - March 1991 :: Boyd Tinsley is asked to play violin on "Tripping Billies".

9.20.91 :: DMB plays its first gig at Trax as a headliner... the first of countless historic performances at the venue. They play several gigs through October, often on Thursday nights.

Aug 1991 :: Peter Griesar is asked to officially join the band.

 

March 1991 :: DMB records another 3 song demo including The Song That Jane Likes, Recently, & Tripping Billes featuring guest Boyd Tinsley.

 

 

10.22.91 :: Ants Marching (No New Directions) & Spotlight debut.

June 1991 :: After 4 years, Carter Beauford leaves "B.E.T. on Jazz" the show on which he regularly performed.

 

1991 :: Boyd Tinsley tours heavily in the Charlottesville area with the Boyd Tinsley Band & Down Boy Down.
