11.05.91 :: DMB plays the 1st of their historic weekly Tuesday Night gigs at Trax.

Summer 1990 :: Dave meets Lydia Conder, another resident of the pink warehouse and performs Watchtower & I'll Back You Up for her. She is an immediate fan.

 

 

 

 

 

 

6.04.91 :: Mark Roebuck sets DMB up with their 1st weekly gig at Eastern Standard in Charlottesville, VA. Roebuck is a bartender at the venue.

Jan 1990 :: Dave and Mark Roebuck finish The Song That Jane Likes

Summer 1990 :: Dave performs Watchtower & I'll Back You Up for Lydia Conder at her apartment in the pink warehouse.

Summer 1990 :: Dave could often be found hanging out at Hoffman's apartment in the pink warehouse crafting what would become his first songs.

 

 

 

 

 

Oct - Nov 1990 :: Dave Matthews records a demo of this 1st 4 songs including Best of Whats Around, I'll Back You Up, Recently & The Song That Jane Likes. Dave is joined by Greg Howard, John D’Earth, and Kenneth Davis. Recording took place at Greg Howard's personal studio.

1990 :: Dave Matthews becomes good friends with Ross Hoffman who encourages him to focus on songwriting.

 

4.05.92 :: DMB plays at Charlotteville's Van Rypers Music Festival, then the largest crowd they'd ever played for.

1989-1990 :: Dave & Mark Roebuck record songs as "Tribe of Heaven". Album was recording in Greg Howard's studio and would go unreleased until March 2005. This is the first known recording of "Song That Jane Likes". More>

 

 

 

Summer 1990 :: Dave & Leroi bond at Millers over whiskeys and conversation on the evils of apartheid.

 

 

 

 

3.01.92 :: Dave Matthews & Greg Howard play a show at Millers.

 

6.03.97 :: DMB opens the Summer Tour in Richmond, VA for what is the shortest full band touring year in the band's history.

 

 

 

9.01.91 & 9.02.91 :: DMB plays their first out of state gigs at the Road House in Denver, CO. This is also the band's first time playing gigs 2 nights in a row at the same venue.

 

 

9.20.91 :: DMB plays its first gig at Trax as a headliner... the first of countless historic performances at the venue. They play several gigs through October, often on Thursday nights.

Oct 1990 :: After Hoffman helps Dave strengthen intros and outros, and put fragments together from different songs Dave completes his first 4 songs.

 

 

 

Dec 1990 :: With Hoffman's encouragement, Dave approaches Carter Beauford and asks him to help record his original compositions.

Summer 1990 :: Dave & Ross discuss the possibilies of putting together a band.
